Chapter Twenty-One
Frank thought that was the end of it.
Heâd driven to the restaurant and watched the girl from across the street. Just seeing her and how much she resembled others in his family, made him realize that he couldnât meet with her. No way. He didnât want any links between them.
So instead of meeting with her as planned, he'd told the girl to take a hike, so to speak, and as far as he was concerned, she was nothing but a bad memory. For a few days, that belief held firm and he went to work and spent time at home with his family, completely happy in the belief that it was a tempest in a teapot. Nothing more.
Of course, that idiot Curtis, who didn't know when to leave well enough alone, blew that plan out of the water. The man had no sense of propriety.
Did he really think Dean wanted to learn whether this little bitch was either of their illegitimate spawn?
He didn't and he was sure his bachelor son Dean didn't want it either. Dean had a good thing going on. He was a dashing young former soldier, handsome and accomplished, an exec in the Stewart Corporation, and the last thing he wanted was some little bastard cramping his style.
Frank was absolutely certain of it.
Still, he might foolishly decide to do the 'right thing' and get a paternity test and if that happened, they would be in big trouble.
Right away, he could see it â everyone would start looking into Frank's and Deanâs pasts. That would do nothing but open up a huge can of worms â earthworms â and expose them to even more danger than just being the father of a bastard daughter.
The police would call him in for questions.
He couldn't let that happen.
He sent Dean a message.
DAD: Hey, buddy. There's this girl who's been pestering all of us for info on family members because she's trying to find her mother and father â she was abandoned when she was a child. Curt has already spoken with her but she's persistent. If she contacts you, do not, I repeat DO NOT humor her. She's probably trying to find someone to scam. I've read about these kids who show up on your doorstep pretending to be a relative so they can scam you out of money. Ignore her, okay? Her name is Penny.
He sent the text and then expected to wait until the next day to hear back from Dean, but he replied soon after.
DEAN: Hey dad. I already texted with her and told her that Iâd be out of town for a while so I couldnât meet her any time soon. I didn't get her mother or anyone pregnant to my knowledge, but I told her I'd look through my friends and see if any one of them knew of any girl of the right age who had a kid and just up and disappeared. She seemed nice, but a bit of a sad case, if you ask me.
